Faith that Rests in the Resurrection - Romans 4:23-25

What Must I do?
1. For the unbeliever turn from your sin and trust in Christ alone for your righteousness and
salvation (Romans 1:18-3:26).
2. For the follower of Christ, cling to the cross when you are overwhelmed by guilt and
paralyzed by the fear of death (Romans 8:1-39).
3. For the unbeliever, believing specific truth claims from Scripture is not enough. There must be
a determination to abandon all hope in self—all self-righteousness, all personal deeds, and trust
only in the person and work of Christ for you (*See below “More Insights into Faith).”
4. For the follower of Christ, marvel in the blessedness of every sin forgiven. “Blessed are those
whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man against whom
the Lord will not count his [or her] sin.” (Romans 4:7-8; Psalm 32).
More insights into faith:
The early Church Fathers and Reformers recognized three aspects of faith: Notitia (knowledge of
the gospel), Ascensus (assent is to agree that the gospel is true), and Fiducia (trusting in the
gospel’s claims and what it commands, repenting and believing in Christ). With saving faith,
there is a knowledge element and an assent to the truth. But it does not stop with Notitia and
Ascensus. Fiducia is essential to the true meaning of saving faith. All three are indispensable
components of saving faith. Be sure, this gift to believe, and each aspect of faith comes from a
gracious God who gives us the strength to believe and trust in Christ Jesus.

More Encouragement
1. Know that Christ came to save sinners (John 3:16; 1 Timothy 1:15; Luke 5:32)
2. Know that Christ died for sinners (Romans 3:21-26; 5:1-11; 1 John 2:2)
3. Know that Christ was raised for you (Romans 4:23-25; Romans 8:31-39)
4. Know that Christ’s resurrection God is fully satisfied with His Son’s offering for your sins
(Romans 8:1-4)
