Remember, an angelic being is explaining to Daniel numerous future events. Next, he tells him this:

Then the king of the north shall come and throw up siegeworks and take a well-fortified city. And the forces of the south shall not stand, or even his best troops, for there shall be no strength to stand. But he who comes against him shall do as he wills, and none shall stand before him. And he shall stand in the glorious land, with destruction in his hand. He shall set his face to come with the strength of his whole kingdom, and he shall bring terms of an agreement and perform them. He shall give him the daughter of women to destroy the kingdom, but it shall not stand or be to his advantage. Afterward he shall turn his face to the coastlands and shall capture many of them, but a commander shall put an end to his insolence. Indeed, he shall turn his insolence back upon him. Then he shall turn his face back toward the fortresses of his own land, but he shall stumble and fall, and shall not be found. — Daniel 11:15-19

So again, this section declares more back and forth between the north, which is the region of Syria, and the south, which is Egypt. The predominant figures here are General Scopas from the south and Antiochus Magnus from the north. We read that Antiochus takes Sidon in Egypt, the "well-fortified city." Scopas then surrenders as the prophecy declares that he has "no strength to stand." Antiochus takes control of Israel, called here "the glorious land," which sets a few decades of increasing terror for Jews in motion. But to seal the peace deal with Egypt, Antiochus gave his daughter, called here the "daughter of women," who we know as Cleopatra from Syria, to Ptolemy V of Egypt as a wife. Antiochus hoped that through Cleopatra, he could gain more control over Egypt. Yet the plan did not work "to his advantage" because Cleopatra loved her husband and supported the Egyptian regime.

Again, I cannot imagine how it felt for Daniel to hear all this. He is listening to a prophecy that tells him Israel, the land, and the people will become pawns of the sinful leadership around them. The coming generations will be victims of the selfishness, corruption, war, and positioning of the nations and leaders surrounding them.

And as I look out at the world, I don't think much has changed. The same issues and concerns still surround us. But two responses of men concern me. First, when we as followers become gripped by this sense of human fear that our state, nation, and world is falling apart. Fellas, we've been falling apart for a long time. Daniel's world was, and Gabriel's telling him that it will continue indefinitely. The second thing that concerns me is when we look to human leaders to provide us with salvation. Fellas, no human leader provides salvation. Only Jesus does. He's the Savior and no one else, and we have to remember this when we have this inclination to put our hope in anything or anyone else. So the next time you feel overwhelmed by the sin and corruption in this world, remember God is in full command of the greater story. No man determines this. And in the end, he will be victorious. So do your part and keep the faith.

ASK THIS: What are you overwhelmed about in this world?

DO THIS: Confess it below and keep faith in God.

PRAY THIS: God, with all the sin and corruption in this state, country, and world, help me to keep faith that you are in total control.
