Hank Hanegraaff, the host of the Bible Answer Man, continues to unpack Christ’s teaching on divorce. “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery” (Matthew 5: 31–32; cf. 19:1–12). Here’s what we know about divorce in Scripture. (1) God hates divorce (His condescension for human weakness does not negate the original precept of permanent monogamous marriage as revealed from the beginning (Genesis 1). (2) What God has joined together, humans ought not to separate. (3) Mosaic Law permitted divorce only because of hardness of the human heart. (4) Reconciliation and forgiveness should always be foremost in the mind of the believer. We have been forgiven an immeasurable debt, thus it is a horrendous evil to even consider withholding forgiveness from a spouse who sincerely seeks it. (5) The best of all worlds is either to remain single or marry only one person for the duration of one’s life. (6) Divorce is permitted only on the grounds of sexual immorality, desertion (1 Corinthians 7:15), and actions or activities that rise to the level of desertion (threat to a spouse or children’s lives). (7) Marriage is a sacrament of the Church.
