Study Notes:
1. We must accept this word of EXHORTATION to us as sons.
vs.4-6
1) There will be RESISTANCE to our running the race.
Vs. 4 You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin.
If our attitude is not right, we can become discouraged very easily.
“You have not yet resisted to bloodshed.”
2) We need the RESOURCE God has given us for running the race.
Vs. 5
These believers had failed to recall and reassure themselves with the Word of God.
The comfort and strength of God’s Word will avail us not at all if we do not know it. Heb 2:1
3) We must REMEMBER this special word of encouragement while running the race.
The writer quotes Proverbs 3:11,12 , slightly different than you rendering because it is taken from a Greek translation.
The point that Paul made (Heb. 12:7–8) is that a father chastens only his own sons, and this is proof that they are his children.
We can sometimes look at God’s discipline with DISDAIN.
Vs. 5 "My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord,
We should not take this lightly.
We should not just blow it off as nothing.
The other pitfall is DISMAY
Don’t be overwhelmed by it either.
Vs. 5c Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
We should not go to either extreme.
Why?
Because discipline is a telltale sign of being loved by God.
“He punishes everyone He excepts accepts as a son.”
2. We need ENDURANCE for running the race that is before us.
vs. 7-11
1) Discipline must be seen in its proper PERSPECTIVE.
That PERSPECTIVE includes the knowledge that everyone will be chastened.
Vs. 7 If you endure chastening
The implication of the word “if” means that, everyone will need to endure chastening
The command is to endure. The word discipline can mean to teach or instruct. But here it means to correct or punish.
That PERSPECTIVE includes a relationship.
The key words in this quotation are “son,” “children,” and “sons.” These words are used six times in Hebrews 12:5–8.
2) His Discipline is based on His PURPOSE for our lives.
There are 3 types of discipline found in scripture.
HIS PURPOSE can be corrective Discipline
As in the case of King David
Ps 119:67-68
Ps 119:71-73
HIS PURPOSE can be Preventative Discipline
The Apostle Paul went through life with what he called a thorn in the flesh.
2 Cor12:7,8
HIS PURPOSE can be Educational Discipline
Job’s afflictions, coupled with his dialogue with God, gave him a revelation of God far beyond that of his contemporaries.
Job 42:4-6
In Job's case we find that God discipline came not because he was doing badly, but because he was doing well.
3) Discipline comes from our PERFECT Father who is in heaven.
Vs.7
The ancient world could not comprehend how a father could love his child and not discipline him.
And of course, it was not just the ancient world.
It was all of history and all cultures up until the 1960’s
Prov 13:24, Prov 29:15
4) Discipline will PRODUCE godly qualities in our lives.
Vs. 10
Discipline has benefits. These benefits are only gained when we submit.
Why do good earthly fathers correct their kids?
So that their children will respect and obedience.
Discipline brings holiness into our lives.
1 Peter 1:15-16
5) Discipline is a PROCESS that brings about a great harvest.
Vs. 11
It is not pleasant but painful
“This hurts me more than it hurts you.”
It produces a harvest of righteousness and peace.
Heb 12:1-2
