We continue our lesson on Hebrews chapter 7 by looking at verse 3. Here the writer continues his discussion of Melchizedek's priesthood over that of Aaron. In verses 1 and 2, he did so by shedding light on the fact that Melchizedek was both king and priest, and not just any priest, but the priest of the Most High God. The mere fact our Lord is after such a superior priesthood clearly proves His superiority over Aaron and the Aaronic priesthood.
Now, he sets forth Melchizedek's eternal priesthood which is a perfect illustration of our Lord as both our Eternal Priest and King. In this lesson we look at how we are to understand the meaning of this idea of his (Melchizedek) eternal priesthood. As we look at this portion of the chapter, the student must continually keep in mind the writer's purpose; mainly that of establishing the superiority of our Lord and Christianity over Judaism.
