“How He Was Known of Them in the Breaking of Bread” (Experiencing the Grace of Christ in the Biblical Exposition-Luke 24:13-35)

MAIN IDEA /PROPOSITION (vv15-16, 35):
~ The primary purpose of exegesis and exposition must be communion (sharing in, joint- participation in, fellowship) with Christ and with His Church (1 Jn 1:1-5). However, in all of our searching and studying of the Scriptures, we cannot know Christ in truth, unless Christ Himself draws near to us, goes with us, and reveals Himself to us. Therefore, a true saving and sanctifying knowledge of Jesus Christ is all of Grace!

Q. Why didn’t Jesus reveal Who He was right away? This drama unfolds so that Jesus might teach us several things as it relates to how sinners come to know Him in truth:

1. CHRIST WOULD PROVE GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY IN THE MATTER OF KNOWING HIM (V16):
a. Reasoning about the things of Christ apart from His aiding presence is of no avail.1 Cor 2:14-16/ Jn 16:5-7,13-14/ Eph 1:17-21; Jn 3:3-5
b. “Divine Restraint”: They were kept from recognizing him—by God. v4; Mk16:12

CHRIST WOULD REVEAL MAN’S UNBELIEF AND HOPELESSNESS APART FROM GRACE (VV17-24):
They were “sad” because their testimony was not “good news” (gospel), but was:
a. Lifeless: No resurrection: 1 Cor 15:17-19/Rev 1:4,8; 4:8
b. Hopeless: Therefore, No hope: 1 Pet 1:3
c. Bloodless: Redemption without death. Heb 9:12, 22/Eph 1:7/ Col 1:14/1 Pet 1:18/Rev 5:9
d. Faithless: They did not believe the testimony of the Jesus’ disciples (v11), Jesus Himself (v6), nor the OT prophets (v25).

CHRIST WOULD POINT BACK TO THE CLEAR TESTIMONY OF THE SCRIPTURES (VV25-26):
a. The Disciple’s Accountability to know the Scriptures and to believe them. Mt 22:29/Jn 5:39/ 2 Pet 3:16/ Lk 16:31
b. The Divine Affirmation of the Redemptive focus of OT Prophecy. Rev 19:11/Ps 40:7
c. The Due Reward Christ must receive for His accomplished work of Redemption.v26/1 Pet 1:10
~What is this “glory?” It includes all necessary things that must take place as a consequence of His suffering, i.e., His resurrection and witness of Him, His Ascension, Session, Occupation and Rule, Exaltation through Proclamation and Edification of the Church, Second Advent, Judgement, and Final Consummation of all things in Him!

. CHRIST WOULD MODEL GOSPEL/CHRIST-CENTERED EXPOSITION OF THE SCRIPTURES (V27):
v27- The Process of Exposition, Leading to Illumination:
a. Jesus was systematic: “And beginning at Moses…”
b. He was clear: “he expounded unto them”
c. He was thorough: “in all the Scriptures”
i. the Tanakh: Torah = “Moses”/ the Law | Nevi’im= “the prophets” | Ketuvim= “the Psalms”/ writings, poetic books) v32,44-45/ Acts 20:27
d. He was Christ-centered: “… the things concerning Himself”

. CHRIST WOULD MAKE HIMSELF KNOWN IN THE CONTEXT OF GOSPEL FELLOWSHIP (VV28-35):
~ Their Response to the Exposition: “Abide with us”—They desired Him, to know more! Jn 1:14-18/ Phil 3: 10/ 1 Pe2:1-2/ Jn 6:45/
v30- The Power of Exposition, Leading to Communion:
a. Christ must take it (His possession, rule and control/ our submission and humility)
b. Christ must bless it (His sanctification and power/ our prayer and dependence)
c. Christ must brake it (His revelation, illumination, and clarification / our reverence, carefulness, and faithfulness)
d. Christ must give it (His gracious distribution/ our faith (receiving by grace—Jn 1:16-18)

v33- Their Readiness to proclaim Who and What they came to Know (i.e., Evangelism)
