Hebrews 11:1-6: “Faith Delivered”

In this study we will focus on Hebrews 11; Genesis 4:1-7 and 5:21-24
Take some time to read and consider the context to the Chapter.
1. According to Hebrews 11 how did the world come into existence? What does our understanding of the origins of our existence have to do with faith? (Hint: Who was in existence when life began? Who was not?)
2. How do we define faith according to Hebrews 11? Give both a definition of the term faith as well as an example of what faith is?
3. Why does our understanding and concept of faith matter to our Christian walk with Jesus? What misconceptions of faith might we all struggle with? Example: If faith is a gift from God, do we always treat it as such?
4. In verses Hebrews 11:4-5 we are given examples of the ‘faith’ of two Hebrew patriarchs/heroes. What does it say about the faith of Able? What does it say about the faith of Enoch? These are two very interesting examples we are given little information on in the Old Testament. What do these examples of faith tell us about God’s gift of faith? [Genesis 4:1-7 and 5:21-24]
5. What does it mean that they were ‘credited’ with righteousness? Why did they receive their accommodation or reward? What did they do to deserve it?
6. Why is it impossible to please God without faith? Why faith? Why is God only pleased by faith?
7. If faith comes from God and is only possible though the work of Jesus Christ on the Cross, what does that say about our faith? Hint: What does Matthew 3:17 say about God’s attitude/ toward His Son Jesus?
8. If God’s perfect pleasure is His Son, then the only way we can please God is through whom? Why? Whose righteousness do we possess?
