Study Notes:



1. There is no PROFIT in returning to the law.
Vs. 9-10
1) We must ELIMINATE all false teaching.
Vs. 9
The emphasis in this section is on separation from dead religion and
identification with the Lord Jesus Christ in His reproach.
1 Cor 8:8, John 6:26-29

2) We must see that Grace and the Law are mutually EXCLUSIVE.
Vs. 10
Jesus is not only the altar He is also the sacrifice on the altar.
He is the final Yom Kippur sacrifice.
Galatians 5:4

2. We must be PREPARED to suffer for Christ’s sake.
Vs. 11-14
1) We must be willing to IDENTIFY with the suffering of Christ.
Vs. 13
The writer here plays with two words.
CAMP and GATE
Camp meaning the Camp of Judaism
Gate meaning the city gate of Jerusalem
The sacrifice of Jesus was outside the Camp of Judaism
John 15:18-20
2) The IMPORTANCE of a permanent city in our future.
Vs. 14
-1 All those who remained committed to the old Jewish system were
excluded from the benefit of partaking of Christ’s atoning death.
-2 Jesus’ death outside the camp means that he is accessible to anyone in
the world who will come to him.
Rom 8:18

3. The PRIORITY of living should be worship.
Vs. 15-16
1) Worship includes PRAISE and thanksgiving.
Vs. 15

How easy it is for suffering saints to complain, but how important it is for
them to give thanks to God.
John 4:23

2) Worship should be seen PRACTICALLY in our daily lives.
Vs. 16
4. The necessity of PRAYER
Vs. 18

The writer’s conscience is clear because he has performed well in his
spiritual duties toward his friends.

5. A final PETITION and blessing from the author.
Vs. 20-21
1) It is a blessing to no longer be in CONFLICT with God.
Vs. 20
God is called “the God of peace” at least five other times in the New
Testament (15.33" class="scriptRef">Romans 15:33; 16:20; 2 Corinthians 13:11; Philippians 4:9; 1
Thessalonians 5:23).
2) It is a great COMFORT to have Jesus as our shepherd.
Vs. 20b that great Shepherd of the sheep,
Mark 6:34

3) Our relationship with God is now based on the New COVENANT.
Vs. 20c through the blood of the everlasting covenant,
The second component is his eternal covenant/promise, referenced in the
qualifying phrase that follows:
“who through the blood of the eternal covenant…”

4) It is Christ who makes us COMPLETE for every good work.
Vs. 21

 The doctors knew it because it meant “to set a broken bone.”
 To fishermen it meant “to mend a broken net” (see Matt. 4:21).
 To sailors it meant “to outfit a ship for a voyage.”
 To soldiers it meant “to equip an army for battle.”

The question is, “Did the Jewish believers read and obeyed this letter?
