A man's steps are from the Lord; how then can man understand his way? — Proverbs 20:24

One thing that captures me about a man is his vision. The vision he has for life, future, career, and family. But over the years, I have discovered that much of a man's vision is a futile attempt to play God.

You see, I may have a good idea of what I want to do, but then God has his plan. And sometimes, his plan competes with my plan. And well, in that case, there is only one winner. And the winner ain't me.

Unfortunately, it has taken me about 40-50 years to figure this one out.

In fact, nine years ago, I founded the ministry I lead today — Resolute. At the time, I thought I had a pretty good idea about how it should look and what we were going to do. I wrote a 50+ page business plan full of vision, goals, strategies, and tactics. And at the time, I thought this was the right thing to do. But over the years, I have flipped back through that plan only to discover that everything in it is different from what we planned. This is because we can cast all the vision we want, but it's God who orders a man's steps. It's God who decides how things will work from one day to the next.

This is why I wince today when I hear a man, pastor, or leader cast a vision. Because they can have all the vision they want and even stir passion in masses of people, but if it ain't God's vision, it ain't work. Because no man gets to play God. Only the Lord orders a man's steps.

Now while casting a predictable vision of the future is impossible, I have discovered that I can take steps. Daily steps of obedience, each and every day. And that's what I have done for the last nine years in this ministry. And over those years, that's all I have done. It has not followed a clear business plan, but I don't think God cares. What God wants is obedience from me.

But here's the amazing part. I have discovered when you are obedient one day, then the next, and the next over a long period of time, you will usually be able to look back and see the vision God has for you. You will finally see and discover the path he has you on. And then you will see not your vision, but his vision. And when you catch a glimpse of this vision, don't go and tell other people that this was your vision. It was never yours. It was God's. He just revealed it to you over time and in a way that you could handle it and stay humble all at the same time. He is the God of all Vision, and you are always just a mere mortal man. And when you get to this point in your journey you will understand something — the mysterious ways of the Lord our God. Let him lead today. Stop worrying about your vision. Just be obedient to him, one day at a time.

ASK THIS: Where is your vision getting in the way of God's? What's one act of obedience you need to do today?

DO THIS: Share it below.

PRAY THIS: Father, may I always be obedient. Reveal your ways to me.

PLAY THIS: Be Thou My Vision.
