"As I was on my way and drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone around me. And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?' And I answered, 'Who are you, Lord?' And he said to me, 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.' Now those who were with me saw the light but did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me. And I said, 'What shall I do, Lord?' And the Lord said to me, 'Rise, and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all that is appointed for you to do.' And since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me, and came into Damascus. — Acts 22:6-11

I think this section of Paul's testimony is an excellent reminder of how the Lord works in our life.

You see, I think as followers, we sometimes get frustrated with how the Lord works in our life, mainly because we know that the Lord can work and do great things through us. As we read the bible, we are told that God is sovereign and knows all things, and we want to believe that he has a plan for our life. But then we get frustrated because he knows this plan and we don't. And in the moments we are tested by the challenges of life, we come to him and ask him to reveal his plan because we don't understand it, but he doesn't give us as much information as we want. He only gives us the next step.

That's what Paul tells us in this text. Jesus showed up and only gave him the next step. He told him to God to Damascus that's it. God did not tell him anything else. He did not tell him:

That Jews and Christians were going to reject him.
That he was going to have to flee to Saudi Arabia for three years.
That he would try to return to Jerusalem one day only to be chased out again.
That he would spend seven years in Tarsus.
That he would lead three significant missionary journeys.
That he would be beaten, arrested, ridiculed, shipwrecked, and left for dead.
That he would be the lead author for most of the New Testament.
That he would become the lead on reaching the Gentiles.

And I think God does this so that we'll walk closer with him in the plan that he has for us. He is the Master Planner, and we are his followers. Followers by definition follow. They follow the plan. His plan. The plan. And why? Because God knows we cannot handle knowing the plan. Because if we did know the plan, we would just make our plans. And God does need another planner. What he is looking for is trusting followers. Followers who will trust him the Master Planner. He wants us to have a relationship with him more than having a plan.

And that's what Paul was going to discover. More than plans, Paul had embarked on a wonderful journey of knowing God the Master Planner. And it was God's story that he was going to tell. It was an adventure of a lifetime. But it is only revealed one step at a time.

So just do what God wants you to do today. Take one step of obedience. Show a little more love. Extend grace again. Ask someone for forgiveness. Be patient with others. Listen longer in an irritation. Reject a sin. And then tomorrow, take another step. Over a lifetime, God will reveal his plan because he does not need another planner. He wants you to have a relationship with him more than knowledge of every detail of his plan.

ASK THIS: How do you need to act in obedience to God today?

DO THIS: Seek a relationship, more than every detail of the plan.

PRAY THIS: God, you have a plan, and today I will let you have it. But reveal the next step to me today.
