James 2:20: "But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?"

Are we justified by faith or works?

Those who preach a false Gospel of works often use James 2:20 to say that without works and faith together, you cannot be saved. But this goes against grace through faith alone. So what does the verse, "... faith without works is dead" actually mean? What is "dead faith" vs. "living faith"?
