The people of God are referred to collectively as being a woman and Jesus is referred to as being our husband. And so Jeremiah spoke by the word of the Lord that the woman would encompass the man, meaning that God would live within his people. For the old covenant this referred to him being in their midst, but in the new covenant this has to do with him actually living within us by the presence and power of his Holy Spirit.
