One of the things we notice about Jesus’ ministry is the repeated reference to His compassion for needy people. We read that “when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd” (Matt. 9:35-36).
If Jesus’ time with Martha and Mary shows nothing else, it shows His compassion for them. The Greeks and Romans worshipped gods that were subject to fickle and capricious moods, but Jesus consistently manifested deep compassion, gentleness, and kindness (Bible, Expositor and Illuminator Union Gospel Press, Winter December 2020, January, February 2021).
