A lesson on the responsibility of man to believe in Christ, and God's sovereignty in softening the heart, and quickening that person to spiritual life. Fallen man's inability to believe in Christ doesn't nullify his requirement to do so for this reason: men deny God, not on the basis of rationality, but because they love their sin. Therefore it is not a matter of insufficient knowledge or intellect, but a moral failure. They cannot come to Christ because they will not come to Him, and likewise they will not come to Christ because they cannot. In that way God is perfect both in justice, as well as in grace, so that He shows mercy on whom He wills to show mercy – and no one deserves it. It is only by the hearing of the gospel, and the regenerative work of the Holy Spirit in a sinner that this faith in Christ is received, not as an effort of man, but as an unmerited gift. It then bids a person rise up in praise and adoration to their sovereign Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer!
