John 7:25-39 tells us of the events at the end of the feast mentioned in this section. (Sukkot) The people were confused and had a lack of understanding regarding who Jesus was and what to do about what He said and did. This again was at the end of The Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) and as the people debated Jesus was about to say something to the assembled people which foreshadows the change of relationship to God which had never been seen, but only written about in The Prophets. He was about to promise The Holy Spirit to those who believe.

The people were trying to understand all that was taking place and the religious leaders were trying to figure out how to rid themselves of Him, permanently. We also see from the text that when that time came, it would be on God's terms and not theirs. (verse 30)

Before He says what he does there was still yet another debate among His adversaries who wanted to take Him and His words telling them the time would come when He would leave and they wouldn't know where to find Him. He spoke, of course, of heavenly matters after His resurrection (verses 32-36)

We get to the most important part of the text after that. Jesus promises The Holy Spirit to those who believe. (verses 37-39) Belief is the issue. Not belief in His existence, they all knew He existed, this is a matter of relationship, based upon His Sacrifice and the indwelling of His Spirit in those believers.
