December 18, 2022. International Standard Sunday School Lesson. John The Baptist Appears. Outline Below
He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
John the Baptist was the last “Old testament” prophet. His unique role was to be the direct forerunner of the Messiah. All that he said and did was for the purpose of focusing attention on the Messiah. John was Jesus’ humble announcer. He didn’t compete with Jesus for attention or steal his glory. This week’s lesson focuses on this special man and his challenging message.
I. PRESENTATION OF JOHN THE BAPTIST (Luke 3:2-6)
-God’s work is accomplished through individuals who are obedient to His direction (Luke 3:2-4).
-The Messiah’s work is to make the crooked lives of men straight through His salvation (Luke 3:5-6).
II. JOHN’S DESCRIPTION OF THE MESSIAH (Luke 3:15-18)
-There should be no question in the mind of an observer about the commitment of a believer in Jesus Christ (Luke 3:15).
-Jesus Christ is far more awesome than most people can begin to imagine (Luke 3:16-18).
John the Baptist had the responsibility of preparing the way for Jesus, the Messiah. He faithfully warned his generation of Jews to prepare for the Messiah’s kingdom by repenting and living the kind of life that was consistent with that repentance. John denied that he was the Messiah as he continued to focus on the One who was to come. He yielded to God’s will for his life and he was committed to promoting only God’s agenda. We should follow in that same manner.
