The Text Readings (formerly known as “Day Texts”) are usually anywhere from 15-60 minutes. This show is about Joshua 5:13-15, an account in which a human servant of God, Joshua, is confronted by another servant of the same God, but not just any servant. The one confronting Joshua in our Text Reading is none other than “the prince of the army of Jaho(h)-ah.”
With only one other angel positively serving God in the Bible who is called, “prince,” namely, Michael (Daniel 10:21), is Joshua 5:13-15 another appearance of God’s chief angel? Is this “prince” the “Great Prince” of Daniel 12, the Archangel?
Join me this evening as we consider our Text Reading in context and in the light of accounts where Michael and the angel of Jaho(h)-ah are described using terms similar to how the angel who confronts Joshua is described. Translations are from both the Hebrew (H) and Greek (G) texts.
(H) 5:13 Then it came about that Joshua happened to be near Jericho and he lifted up his eyes and he saw and, behold! a man standing still in front of Joshua and his sword was drawn in his hand. Then Joshua began to walk toward him and Joshua began to ask him, "Are you for us, or for our enemies?"
(G) 5:13 Then it came about as Joshua [Greek: Iesous ("Jesus")] was in the area of Jericho, as he raised his eyes he saw a man who had been standing in front of him; his sword had been drawn (it was in his hand). Then as Joshua approached he said to the man, "Are you with us or are you with our enemies?"
(H) 5:14 Then the man standing before Joshua began to say, "I am not for your enemies. Because I am the royal ruler of the spirit army of Jaho(h)-ah. Now I have come." Then Joshua began to fall with his face to the ground and to bow down and to say to him, "What does my Lord have to say to his servant?"
(G) 5:14 But the man said to Joshua, "I am the Chief Commander [lit., "archgeneral"] of the spirit powers of Lord [Jaho(h)-ah]. Now I have come." Then Joshua fell upon his face, upon the ground. Joshua then said to him, "Master [Greek: despotes]. What do you command to your servant?"
(H) 5:15 Then the royal ruler of the army of Jaho(h)-ah began to say to Joshua, "Remove your sandals from upon your feet, for the place on which you stand is sacred." Then Joshua did just as he was told.
(G) 5:15 Then the Chief Commander of Lord [Jaho(h)-ah] said to Joshua, "You must remove the sandals from your feet, because the place on which you have stood is holy."
