Justice and the Marginalized Deuteronomy 24:10-21 Sunday School
This week’s lesson text contains laws given to Israel to ensure that they treated the poor fairly and justly. These laws also reveal some principles that we should live by today when dealing with poor and marginalized people.
I. FAIR AND JUST ACTIONS SHOWN IN LENDING (Deuteronomy 24:10-13)
As Christians, if we make personal loans to others, we must treat them justly and fairly and demonstrate integrity when collecting the debt (Deuteronomy 24:10-13).

II. FAIR AND JUST ACTIONS SHOWN TO WORKERS (Deuteronomy 24:14-15)
If we are employers, we should never take advantage of our employees, and always pay them on time (Deuteronomy 24:14-15).

III. FAIR AND JUST ACTIONS SHOWN AMONG THE PEOPLE (Deuteronomy 24:16-18)
Each individual is responsible for his or her own sins (Deuteronomy 24:16).
Those in positions of judgment should never distort the justice of poor and needy people, considering that they could be in the same condition (Deuteronomy 24:17-18).

IV. FAIR AND JUST ACTIONS SHOWN DURING HARVESTING (Deuteronomy 24:19-21)
If we ever have more than we need, it’s God will that we share with the poor and needy instead of throwing the excess away (Deuteronomy 24:19-21).

Although the laws given in our lesson text were directed to the Israelites, the principles behind them should be followed by everyone, especially by believers in Jesus Christ. It’s not possible for anyone to read what God says about poor and marginalized people and not see that His heart is with them. If our Heavenly Father’s compassionate and loving heart leans toward the poor, certainly ours should as well.
