In chapter 10 of Matthew’s gospel, we witness the calling and commissioning of the Twelve Apostles. Before beginning their ministry, Jesus clarifies the mission, giving them instructions to follow His pattern of proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom, healing diseases, raising the dead, cleansing lepers and casting out demons.

Jesus cautioned His disciples about opposition that would come because of Him and His message. Opposition from institutions and people that reject Him and His kingdom should be expected by all who follow Jesus, but we are not left alone. We belong to the King (Matthew 10:32), are empowered by His Spirit (Matthew 10:20) and are cared for by the Father (Matthew 10:30-31). Three times Jesus gives these words of comfort and courage to His disciples: "do not fear."
