The Study of the Commands of Christ - He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him and will manifest myself to him. John 14:21

"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For everyone that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened." Matthew 7:7-8

Study Question: Why did God promise to deliver His people from the bondage of Egypt and then lead them into a wilderness with no water or food?

The Purpose of Prayer - God is love, and love deepens by intimate fellowship. When God created Adam and Eve, He walked and talked with them in the cool of the day.
When God led the nation of Israel into the wilderness, He wanted their need to draw them close to Him for intimate fellowship. Deuteronomy 8:2 Similarly, God desires fellowship with each one of us. He urges us to tell Him every detail of our needs in earnest and thankful prayer, and His peace that transcends human understanding will keep constant guard over our hearts, and minds as they rest in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

The Requirement of Fervency - Prayer, to most of us, is simply asking God for what we need and expecting Him to somehow give it to us. That is not the concept in this command. Asking is simply the first step in receiving something from God. The one who asks must also fulfill the next two steps of seeking and knocking.
For asking to be effective, it must be fervent, and it must come from a righteous person. "The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much" James 5:16.
If prayer was simply a matter of asking God for what we need and having Him give it to us, we would not understand the need for the deep and continuing relationship that comes by fervent asking, diligent seeking, and persistent knocking.

Important Factors for Asking - The word used by Jesus to describe our requests is aiteo. It depicts the petition of one in a lesser position to a superior. It means to "to ask, beg, call for, crave." It is distinguished from erotao, which more frequently indicates making a request of one who is on an equal level.
The consistent urging of the Lord to pray is enhanced by the promises that accompany those instructions. "Ask, and it shall be given you... For everyone one that asketh receiveth' Matthew 7:7-8 "ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full" John 16:24. "If ye ask anything in my name, I will do it" John 14:14.

How to Seek
If we ask according to the requirements of God, our requests will be granted. The nation of Israel asked for bread, and the Lord gave them manna. However, the Israelites had to be diligent and resourceful to gather it daily.
In a similar way, we must be diligent to seek after God and the answers and provisions He has given in response to our requests. "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you" Matthew 6:33
