PASTOR TIM's NOTES:

Genesis 24:1-67
“A Bride for Isaac”
1. Abraham’s servant makes a PROMISE he must fulfill.
Vs. 1-9
1a. The PROMISE involves a bride for Isaac.
Abraham’s great concern was that, before he died, he would find a wife for his only
son Isaac.
1b. The PROMISE is sworn to by an oath.
Whatever the reason it formalized the importance of his task (cf. 47:29).
Why make him PROMISE?
Isaac was the next “living link” in the chain of blessing that culminated in the birth
of the Savior, Jesus Christ; so whatever happens to Isaac is of utmost importance
in God’s great plan of salvation.
Abraham also gave him some words of encouragement(24:7, 39–41).
He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.
2. Abraham’s servant PRAYS for success.
Vs. 10-21
2a. The servant PRAYS and develops a plan.
How would he go about finding the right woman for his master’s son?
His plan was simple. He would ask for water for himself and if she offers to get
water for the camels also then He will know she is the one.
This was not a fleece (cf. Judges 6:36–40).
The servant did not ask that the normal effects of nature be suspended.
2b. The servants PRAYER seems to be answered.
The servant asks for water and she agrees to give him water and water for all of his
camels.
In His providence, God brought Rebekah to the well just as the servant was
praying. This is not the best way for God’s people to determine the will of God,
because the conditions we lay down for God to meet might not be in His will.
3. Abraham’s servant is now POSITIVE that the LORD has directed him.
Vs. 22-31
3a. POSITIVE confirmation comes when he hears the name of her grandfather.
Rebekah replies that she is the granddaughter of Nahor.
And yes, they have room for them to lodge.
3b. The POSITIVE confirmation causes praise and worship.
The sight of the servant’s intense worship charged the girl’s heart, and the
mention of Abraham’s name, which she had heard so many times as part of the
household lore, filled her with expectancy and awe.
3c. The POSITIVE confirmation brings a formal invitation to the home.
Laban’s character is revealed in 24:30:
Laban was a man who loved money and taking advantage of others.
4. The servant will make the PROPOSAL with great urgency.
Vs. 32-49
4a. The PROPOSAL includes retelling the story.
The purpose of retelling the story is to convince them of God’s providential
guidance so that they would consent to sending Rebekah to Isaac.
4b. The PROPOSAL includes a description of the greatness of Abraham.
God has blessed Abraham greatly. He has flocks and herds, servant and camels
and donkeys, silver and gold. Abraham has a son and he is the only heir.
4c. The PROPOSAL includes the details of his prayer.
He then recounts his prayer and how God answered his prayer when Rebekah
came and brought water from the well for him and the camels.
5. The PARENTS and brother give their answer.
Vs. 50-60
5a. The PARENTS and brother agree to the marriage.
They agree that God has worked out the details of their meeting.
5b. The PARENTS and brother bless Rebekah as she leaves.
Rebekah agrees to leave right away.
Her simple “I will go” states the nature of her trust in the God of Abraham.
Yet Rebekah had to make her choice of Isaac.
There is no conflict between divine sovereignty (God’s plan) and human
responsibility (man’s choice).
In fact, Jesus taught both in one statement: John 6:37-38
6. The PURPOSES of God are fulfilled.
Vs. 61-67
6a. The PURPOSES of God are seen in this beautiful meeting.
Rebekah lifted up her eyes and saw Isaac coming.
She gets off her camel and covers herself with a veil.
6b. The PURPOSES of God are culminated in this marriage.
Isaac brought Rebekah into his mother’s tent and they were married. Rebekah
replaced Sarah by entering the deceased matriarch’s tent.

This story, and all of Scripture, teaches us that our lives are not ruled by chance or fate
but by God. Proverbs 3:5-6
