PASTOR TIM's NOTES:

Genesis 41:1-57
“The Time for Joseph to Rise to Power”
1. The REQUEST of Pharaoh came after his dreams.
Vs. 1-14
1a. His REQUEST is based on the details of his two dreams.
From the river came 7 fine or good looking cows
Then 7 other cows that were ugly
the “ugly and thin” cows (Hebrew, “evil in appearance and thin of flesh”)
Pharaoh had a 2nd dream
The attack of the cannibal ears was again too much for Pharaoh, and he awoke a
second time to discover that he was dreaming.
1b. His REQUEST is based on his troubled spirit.
They were also closely parallel.
 Both featured cannibalism.
 Both ended in consuming violence.
 And both dreams were built on the number seven.
1c. His REQUEST is based on the butler remembering Joseph.
So at the opportune moment the cupbearer delicately volunteered that he knew of
someone who could interpret Pharaoh’s dreams.
1d. His REQUEST brought Joseph from the prison.
And when he had shaved himself and changed his clothes, he came in before
Pharaoh” (v. 14).
2. The RESPONSE of Joseph to the dreams.
Vs. 15-36
2a. The RESPONSE of Joseph did not include his being intimidated.
What impact did this incredible change have on Joseph?
There could have been a temptation to tell Pharaoh what he thought Pharaoh
wanted to hear.
2b. Joseph RESPONDED by giving God the glory.
Would Joseph melt? Would he himself resort to flattery and a courteous, oblique
answer? No way! “Joseph answered Pharaoh, ‘It is not in me’ ” (v. 16a).
2c. Joseph RESPONDED by telling Pharaoh that God had given him the dreams for a
purpose.
Consider the words of Jesus before Pilate. John 19:10-11
2d. Joseph RESPONDS by giving his advice.
We can see brilliance in Joseph’s plan
 Collect 20 percent x 7 years saving plan
 Decentralization of the stored grain.
 The storage of grain in centers of population provided for adequate protection should it
be needed as the famine grew in severity.
 Make sure you have good leadership
3. Joseph's RISE to Power
Vs. 37-45
3a. Joseph’s RISE to power was based on his relationship with the Lord.
Joseph had gone from the pit to the pinnacle in a single day.
3b. Joseph’s RISE to power included the gifts of royalty.
The signet bore the name of Pharaoh in its cartouche (an oval surrounding his
hieroglyphics).1
Joseph was decked out in garments of “fine linen,” an almost transparent linen
that was worn by court officials.
A gold chain was hung around his neck as a gift and a symbol of highest
distinction.
Joseph was then treated to an inaugural parade.
3d. Joseph’s RISE to power included a new name and a wife.
“Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphenath-paneah” (v. 45a), which is generally
understood to mean “God speaks and lives.”4
Asenath was of aristocratic blood, “the daughter of Potiphera priest of On” (v.
45b).
4. The RULE of Joseph
Vs. 46-57
4a. The RULE of Joseph was marked by his faith and faithfulness.
His action indicates that he believed the clock was ticking.
4b. The RULE of Joseph included two sons born to him.
The first was named Manasseh
"For God has made me forget all my toil and all my father's house."
God had worked in Joseph’s life to the point that there was no bitterness, there
was no pain attached to the past.
The second was Ephraim
"For God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction."
He saw that he was able to be fruitful even in the midst of his affliction.
4c. The RULE of Joseph included a time of great famine.
The seven years of famine were as terrible as the seven years of bounty were
wonderful.
SO HOW DOES JOSEPH DO IT?
1) HE BELIEVED GOD WAS WITH HIM AND CONTROLLING THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF HIS LIFE.
2) HE BELIEVED GODS WORD; including the Covenant promises made to Abraham, Isaac and
Jacob

4 Allen P. Ross, Creation & Blessing (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker, 1998), p. 643.
3) HE ALSO BELIEVED HIS GOD GIVEN DREAMS.
We could say that he believed that God had a plan for his life.
