In Jesus we have the perfect example and model for how to live a life acceptable to The Father. He is The Son and an absolute representation of The Father (John 14:8-11) We are challenged by Paul to follow His example "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus" in our service and mission. Obedience is the main point of this section.
As Paul develops this point, he is also careful to make a very important addition to his thought. We cannot do any of this in our own strength, He must supply all things necessary to perform His will. We learn His directions and then walk in them by faith. "It is God who works in us, booth to will and to do for His good pleasure." (2:12-13) To attempt to do otherwise, and walk in our own power, means a lack of power and direction. This would be a sure fire way to insure frustration and failure.
God desires that we be successful as we serve Him, so He is The One to guide and empower, we are to follow and wait for His direction and equipping.
