Our Father, you are the Author of life, the Giver of gifts, and the Maker of heaven and earth. You alone are the true and living God. No one else compares. Every other so-god is false, empty, and lifeless. All the worthless idols of man are loathsome in your sight and you take special notice of and are much displeased with the sin of having any other god. We have sinned by failing to fully rid ourselves of idolatry. Often, we have served the gods of popularity, pleasure, power, and prestige. Though our chief end is to glorify and enjoy God, we tried to find purpose and delight in other things. Even the good gifts you freely bestow have been distorted by our sin and treated like gods. We have idolized friends and family, hallowed jobs and recreations, enshrined skills and achievements, and venerated food and drink. Please forgive us for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Minister: What do we pray for in the third petition?
Unison: In the third petition, which is, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven, we pray, that God, by his grace, would make us able and willing to know, obey, and submit to his will in all things, as the angels do in heaven.
Minister: What encouragement does Scripture give to this end?
Unison: Scripture says, May the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
