Suffering Well at Work
1 Peter 2:18–25
Rob Chinn

Key idea: Believers, fundamentally changed by the work of the Suffering Servant, are to emulate Christ by honoring our masters and suffering for righteousness sake as an act of worship to God and to open a channel of His grace to us.

I. The Mandate to Suffer for the Sake of Righteousness

II. The Model of the Suffering Servant is Our Model

a. Called to Model the Suffering Servant

b. The Clear Example of the Suffering Servant

-Christ lived sinlessly and was innocent
-Christ did not speak deceitfully, he did not lie, he did not fabricate
-Christ did not speak harshly in retaliation for being insulted
-Christ did not lash out with threats
-Christ trusted the Father

III. The Manifested Grace of Suffering

Suffering allows us to:
- Give Glory to God
- Grow our faith in God’s sovereignty
- Gain insight into the garbage we worship more than God
- Gaze with longing for a world without sin
- Germinate a witness to our masters and to our coworkers
- Gets us opportunities to serve others

Small Group Discussion Questions:
- Share an incident from work, past or present, where you were unfairly treated and your reaction to the incident.
- How does your reaction reflect Christ’s example as the Suffering Servant or how would you change your reaction if you could?
- How would you apply showing honor to your boss in your current or past work situations?
- What is challenging to you when it comes to showing honor to your boss?
