Jeremiah 29:10-14 contains some of the most wonderful words of promise, and hope. It is often misinterpreted and consequently misapplied. These words are words of comfort to Israel who is being taken into exile to Babylon. But they also have some relevance to Israel's future regathering into the Messianic Age (Jeremiah 29:14), and of course they are to be properly applied to our lives as well.
They way they are to be applied to our lives is to take note of what is revealed about the character of God. For He is the same yesterday and forever, and therefore what we learn about His nature as it related to Israel in this past event, can be applied to our lives in our own day and age, and in regards to our own personal experiences.
There are three things we learn about God's character. First, He is sovereign in the affairs of life. This is brought out by His promise that the captivity in Babylon will last for a limited period of time. Seventy years precisely. Not more or less. A time-frame that God in His sovereignty has set (Jeremiah 29:10).
Second, He is good. Everything the Lord does is for good. James writes, "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows" (James 1:17). And Paul reiterates this truth when he writes, "And we know that in all things God works for the food of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:26). All things work together for our good because our God is a good God. This is Jeremiah's point as well when he states, "I have plans to prosper you and not to harm you."
Third, He is always present and available. Yeshua promised us this at the conclusion of what is referred to as the Great Commission. He said, "Surely I am with you always even unto the very end of the age" (Matthew 28:20). This is the same point Jeremiah makes when he conveys God's heart to the Jewish people, "You will seek me and you will find me..." (Jeremiah 29:13). We must genuinely want Him in our lives, that's true. But if we do as evidenced by seeking him with our whole heart, He will make Himself known to us.
