But what does the Scripture say? "Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman." — Galatians 4:30

The quote here is a comment made by Sarah in Genesis 21:10. Sarah makes this statement to Abraham about his maidservant (a.k.a., the "slave woman") and her son Ishmael. The backstory is Abraham's wife Sarah was originally unable to have children and therefore permitted Abraham to have sex with their slave woman in an attempt to fulfill the promise given by God that he would be "the father of many nations." (Genesis 17:4-5) But, as we know, this was a human attempt to accomplish a divine promise. And it did not work out but only wreaked havoc on the world.

In the same way, Paul says that our human attempts at divine salvation will only wreak havoc on salvation. Because salvation is God's burden to bear. Only he could bring it into the world. No one else could do it. And he did it by birthing a divine Son into a broken world. We could not do it.

And fellas, this is where faith begins. Faith that we have a Father, who sent his Son, who saves us from our sin. We could not save ourselves. And this is the Good News of Jesus Christ. Yet to have this faith, we have to cast out one idea. Only one. That we could ever in any way save ourselves. 

So like Sarah said to Abraham and Paul said to the Galatians — "cast out" and "reject" this idea. Believing in any way that you can save yourselves is not faith in God. It's only faith in yourself.
