Spiritual Reading is the practice of contemplative interaction with scripture. We do it in four steps, reading the passage each time:

Focus - try to quiet your mind and just focus on the scripture being read. Leave expectations, presuppositions, and pressure to "figure it out" behind.

Listen - Try to identify a word or a phrase in the passage that stands out to you.

Respond - Take the word or phrase and turn it into a prayer. It could be a question, a thought that you share with God, simply saying "Thank you" or "Why this phrase?" Allow the prayer to develop as the Spirit of God engages with you through the scripture.

Rest - In the final reading of the passage, allow yourself to be at peace. Pray your prayer, make it something you take with you throughout your day and allow it to develop over time into a conversation with God.
