STUDY NOTES:
JOHN CHAPTER 19 (continued):
Verses 28-30… Jesus did thirst. They filled a sponge with vinegar and after Jesus received it, He said, “It is finished”, and He bowed His head and gave up the ghost.
· The Greek word for finished is: “Tetelestai”. This word means to bring to a close, to complete, to fulfill. In studying the Greek text, this word is written in the “present and aorist tense”, which means something that continues on into the future and has ongoing results / implications. What Jesus was saying here is
“It is finished and will continue to be finished.” In other words, the work of man’s redemption and salvation is now completed!
Romans 10:4… Hebrews 10:11-12…
Verses 31-32… The Jews ask Pilate to break the legs of those who are crucified, so that their bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath Day.
Exodus 20:8-13… Deuteronomy 21:22-23… Matthew 23:23-24…
Verse 33… When the soldiers came to Jesus and saw he was dead already, they did not break his legs.
Exodus 12:43-46… Numbers 9:9-12 ... Psalm 34:19-20…
Verse 34… One of the soldiers pierced Jesus side with a spear. Out came water and blood.
1st John 5:6-8…
The Roman flogging or scourging that Jesus endured prior to being crucified normally consisted of 39 lashes, but could have been more. Mark 15:15… John 19:1...
