Nathan Condemns David. We are always tempted to put ourselves in the place of the hero when reading a story. I would run into the burning building to save the child. I would step in saw someone being bullied in front of me. And I would be like Nathan, confronting the sins of the powerful.
A lot can be gained by resisting the desire to be the hero. If truth be told, we would be more like David than Nathan in most cases. We think our sins have passed by without consequences, that maybe even God didn’t notice. We squash gnawing guilt. If no consequences manifest themselves, we must have been forgiven!
Let David’s story warn us against this way of thinking. Our sins have consequences in others’ lives. And sins we ignore instead of confessing harden our hearts to other sins, making us in agreement with the wickedness of others.
The tendency to abuse our own influence must constantly be held in check. We must be willing not only to hold others to account but also to listen when Christian brothers and sisters do the same for us. By doing so we will fulfill the words of Christ: First cast the beam out of thine own eye; and then shall thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.( Matthew 7:5)
