Our Response
Confessing our Sins:
Sovereign God, We confess today that we often prefer our plans to your plans. We prefer the dreams we have formed for ourselves to any future that may demand that we suffer and sacrifice. We have become angry and responded poorly when our earthly hopes have been dashed, blaming you and others, forgetting that you are sovereign and good. We are thankful that Joseph shows us how you can use dashed expectations for good, you can bring your people up from the pit though you bring them down from the heights, you can rescue us from Potiphar’s wife, from temptation and accusation, you can redeem us from chains. Lord, help us to know and trust that you can use years that seem wasted for good, just as you enabled Joseph to endure years in chains. Humble us to know that your plans for us are better than our sinful and selfish visions, and to believe with a willing heart that you sometimes send your people into Egypt, but always for a good end. Show us your grace, that we might see that any plans you make for us are glorious, and that we might appreciate Christ, whose whole life was that of a suffering servant, and who said “not my will, but your will be done.” Holy Spirit, make us like Christ, even in his suffering. We pray in his name, amen. (Drawn from Genesis 38-44)
