Join me later this evening as we continue our series on where and how the Bible contradicts the Trinity.
While we realize many have been raised believing in the Trinity, If the Trinity is not actually taught in the Bible then it should not be required belief. In fact, if what is explicitly taught contradicts the Trinity it is best to avoid using it when it comes to worshiping the biblical God.
The fifth text we will use to show the Trinity conflicts with the Bible is Hebrews 1:4-6, which proves: 1) The Son has “become better” than angels, not because always was better or shares the nature of the one God, but because he ‘inherits a name better than’ the angels’ “name”; 2) the heavenly Son’s new name puts him at God’s “right hand,” not any higher; and 3) the Son is allowed to receive “worship” or “obeisance” by the Father, similar to how he allowed it to ancient kings and others because they represented him, not because they equally share God’s nature.
As our subject texts plaint plainly teach, the heavenly Son became better than angels after he was raised to God’s right hand and given a new name that is better because of what he did. For this reason God permits “worship” of the Son similar to how the Son permits “worship” of his followers in Revelation 3:9. We will also review other related texts and consider some of what Athanasius taught about our subject texts in the 4th century CE.
Please join me to discuss these texts, if you can do so with genuine interest and respect:
Hebrews Chapter 1 (TGM)
1 In different places and in various ways, in ancient times God was the one who spoke to the forefathers by means of the prophets.
2 During the time of these last days, God spoke to us by means of a son, whom he made [or, "placed"] an heir of all things, by whom he also made the ages.
3 He exists as the brightness of God's glory and an imprint of God's spirit being, and he brings forth [or, "carries"] all things with his word of power, after making a cleansing of sinners he sat down at the right hand of the Greatness in high places.
4 He became so much better than the angels, better in the sense that he has inherited a name that is different [or, "more excellent"] from them [compare Philippians 2:9, “name above every name”].
5 For to which of the angels did he ever say, "You are my Son. I, today, I have generated you." And again, "I will become as a Father to him and he will become as a Son to me."
6 But whenever he again introduces the Firstborn [see note] into the inhabited world he says, "All angels of God must bow in royal homage to him" [see note].
[Note on 1:6, “the Firstborn”: Greek: ton prōtotokon, showing Jesus is "the" real "Firstborn" of God, not "placed" or "made" a firstborn in place of another who is actually God's real “Firstborn.” See Deuteronomy 21:17, where we are given a definition for “firstborn,” namely, “the beginning of [the F/father’s] generative power.”]
