“THE BOOK OF JOSHUA ~ a Type & Shadow” A-043 (04-27-22) Joshua 9:1-5
-----------------------------------------------------
Joshua 9:1-2 (New English Translation) says, “1 When the news reached all the kings on the west side of the Jordan—in the hill country, the foothills, and all along the Mediterranean coast as far as Lebanon {Heb. in front of} (including the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites)—2 they formed an alliance to fight against Joshua and Israel.”
● From a footnote, we find what is called a translator’s note (tn) saying that the Hebrew renders this to read, “When all the kings who were beyond the Jordan heard.” When we see the word, “foothills,” this comes from the Hebrew word for {šᵊp̄ēlâ, shĕf–ōy–lǎw’ meaning lowland} which are the transition region between the hill country and the coastal plains.
● Now, verse 2 ends with the words, “they formed an alliance to fight against Joshua and Israel,” of which a translator’s note (tn) from the NET Bible footnote points out that the Hebrew renders this as “they gathered together to fight against Joshua and Israel [with] one mouth.” Another way of looking at these words could be stated as with one voice or one mind.
● Fear can seem like it is not harmful at first, but in the end a person or group of people will always defeat themselves by not operating from faith and trust in the Lord God. So, as they gathered together to fight with Joshua and Israel with one accord; a footnote says, “This is a classic, frontal attack – they will try to defeat Israel on the field of battle, in head-to-head competition.” Generally speaking, the words “with one mouth” are also interpreted as “one mind.” The Hebrew word for “accord,” as used in the KJV, it pê {pĕh} means the mouth.
Joshua 9:3 (NET) says, “When the residents of Gibeon {giḇʿôn, ghĭ–bōhn’ or, hill city} heard what Joshua did to Jericho and Ai,”
● Since the wandering tribes of Canaan are an allegory for the wandering thoughts of unrenewed thinking in our minds, when one thought hears of another thought that was overtaken by truth, for me, it becomes easier to gain ground in terms of renewing other thoughts to the same truth that is in the Eternal Christ-mind within. The fact is that once we hear the truth of Father’s love for His creation, that message becomes confusing and frustrating to some, and liberating to others. And once again, this is the type of battle our thoughts go thoughts when it comes to hearing things we had never heard before, and trying to find a way to embrace them as the truth.
Joshua 9:4 (NET) says, “they did something clever. They {Heb. and they went and} collected some provisions and put worn-out sacks on their donkeys, along with worn-out wineskins that were ripped and patched.”
● A note from the NRSV reads, “they went and prepared provisions;” whereas the NEB reads, “They went and disguised themselves;” and the NIV reads, “they went as a delegation.”
Joshua 9:5 (NET) says, “They had worn-out, patched sandals on their feet and dressed in worn-out clothes. All their bread was dry and hard.”
● For me, this is an allegory for the right-side, left-side brain connection concept, or the spirit-soul connection concept, where the lift-side of the soulish mind does not see any truth other than what the human-form experience has taught it. Yet the right-side, or spirit has always been implanted with the truth of Father’s mind within and completely understands the concepts of the spirit-world.
● These travelers had “worn-out, patched sandal on their feet and dressed in warn-out clothes,” which was a part of their deceptive cover up. Just keep an eye out for deceptive thoughts that come disguised as something that sounds like the truth, but cannot be validated. Now, there is nothing wrong with worn-out clothes, but when it comes to those who would deceive you just because they talk Bible, does not means that truth is emerging, therefore, just like Joshua, we must be led by the Spirit of the Christ-mind within our own thoughts, and “capture, like prisoners of war, every thought and insist that it bow in obedience to the Anointed One,” which is the Christ-mind within.
● I hope you were enlightened and inspired to “dig deep into the Father’s mind within” as you watch this video lesson!
