1. The CONCLUSION of the battle against the five kings.
Vs. 16-24
1) The PLACE where the five kings were hiding.
Vs. 16 But these five kings had fled and hidden themselves in a cave at Makkedah.
Chapter 10 began with the formation of the alliance as a preemptive strike
against Joshua. But it ends with their fate being sealed in a cave.
2) The PLACING of the stones over the mouth of the cave.
Vs. 18
Joshua traps them by sealing the entrance to the cave with large stones
and posting a guard.
3) The need to PURSUE their enemies.
Vs. 19 but pursue your enemies, and attack their rear guard.
Again, Joshua rallies his troops with the assurance that the victory they are
about to pursue is the Lord’s gift (v. 19b
4) The PUNISHMENT was not criticized in that day.
Vs. 21b
These means that because of the supernatural events and protection of
God’s people the critics will be silenced.
That will happen again in the future as well. It is an event referred to as the
Magog Invasion.
Ezekiel 38: 19-22, Ezek 39:21-22
5) The PICTURE of victory that the captains experienced would never be forgotten.
Vs. 24b & quot; Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings."
This humiliating posture announced that Joshua had won a total victory
and their end had come.
It is later attributed to the Lord’s anointed in Psalm 110:1.
Paul makes reference to this event being repeated in the future.
Rom 16:19-20
2. The COMMENTS of Joshua to his men of war would strengthen them.
Vs. 25
1) The COURAGE they needed would be from the Lord.
Vs. 25
Repeating the words often spoken to him personally, he now exhorts his
leaders to be fearless and strong.
2) The CONFIDENCE for the future would also come from the Lord.
Vs.25b
Since Joshua is a type of Jesus Christ, we can apply this scene and these words
to Christ and His people.
Jesus has defeated all His enemies and will one day return and destroy
them forever. Through Him, we can claim victory and put our feet on the
necks of our enemies (Rom. 16:20).
3. The COST that was exacted upon these kings by Joshua.
Vs. 26-27
1) Joshua SLEW them.
Here Joshua would have personally drawn his sword and executed them.
2) Joshua SET them on public display.
Vs. 26b
This was a common custom for victorious armies in the ancient world, and
far worse.
3) Joshua SEALED them with great stones.
Vs. 27b
This pile of stones was another monument in the land speaking of the
power and victory of the Lord.
4. The summary of the CONQUEST in the south.
Vs. 28-42
1) There were seven major CITIES that were conquered.
Vs. 28-38
The fact that there are seven cities speaks of the completeness of the
campaign but also “suggests that this may be a summarizing account.
Abraham settled there and when his wife Sarah was 127 years old, she
died, and Abraham buried her there. He had purchased the cave and its
field at Machpelah.
2) The total COUNTRY of the south was conquered.
Vs. 40-41
Israel didn’t take every little city or slay every citizen or ruler, but they did
enough to break the power of the enemy and establish control over the
land.
3) The CONQUEST achieved was because the Lord God was fighting for them.
Vs. 42b because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.
When we read the conclusion, it is easy to underestimate or even forget the
process. It was the Lord who gave the victory (10:30, 32, 42; 11:6, 8);
The judgments on Canaan are precursors and foreshadowings, terrible
though they were, of the ultimate judgment that awaits the whole creation
at the last day.
