Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. — Proverbs 13:34

Here is a wise saying for you for those culture warriors out there.

Solomon knows that when righteousness prevails, so will its people. Righteousness has an exalting effect not just on one person but potentially on an entire nation. Of course, we need to remember that Solomon was leading a religious nation established by God. We live in much different times today, don’t we?

But just because we live in a different time and under a different kind of government, this does not negate the wisdom in this verse. Instead, it may amplify it. Because I can think of many times in recent years that I have been ashamed of our national leaders. Times that unrighteous men have brought reproach to our nation.

But this is changed by righteousness. Not merely righteous legislation, infrastructure, and spending, but men who speak up and act righteously. Everyone feels the effect of a single righteous man. All it takes is one man. There are many examples all over the Bible. Noah. Abraham. David. Daniel. And, of course, the most well-known of righteous men — Jesus. When one righteous man stands or speaks up, it blasts a righteous light into places of darkness.

And get this, it all begins with you — one righteous man.

Today let’s affect the reproach of our nation by being different men. God is king anyway. He is the ruler. He establishes governments, family, and the church. Let him lead. Follow him. Be righteous. And he will exalt our nation and us.

PRAY THIS: God, use your righteousness through me to impact the reproach I see around me.
