Mel Blanc, the voice talent behind Bugs Bunny, has a memorable epitaph on his tombstone. It reads, “That’s all folks! Mel Blanc. Man of 1,000 voices. Beloved Husband and Father.” Above it all sits the Jewish Star of David. That’s a great example of life achievement and identity. What set Mel apart? He was Jewish. He had some serious voice talent. He was married. He had children. That’s his life. That’s his contribution. That’s his boast, so to speak. Our boast is who we are, what we have, or what we’ve done. It’s what—in our mind—sets us apart and makes us valuable or worthy. In the book of Romans, Paul says something jarring about Christianity. He says faith excludes human boasting. In other words, as Christians, nothing we have done makes us valuable or worthy to God. The object of our boast is not ourselves, but the accomplishment of another. Join us this Sunday at GraceLife as we consider “The End of Boasting.”
