God promised Abraham that his descendants would be enslaved in a foreign nation (Genesis 15:13-14) and would be liberated by God after 400 years. God did as He promised and brought them to Himself at Sinai. Moses went up on Sinai where he spoke with Yahweh. While there, the Israelites complained that they didn’t know what happened to Moses so Aaron made them a “god” out of their gold. In this message we trace this idea of idolaters wanting a tangible “god” rather than believe the God of the bible and apply it to idolatry today. When there was a delay in the return of the mediator in Exodus, they turned to idolatry. Today, because Jesus the Mediator of the New Covenant has delayed His return, people also look for tangible deities that they can control. The gold that should have been used for the place of worship God ordained became the material for a false god of their own making. Today people make icons of their own design and worship according to their own desires. God determines how He will be worshipped and those who reject His revealed will resort to various versions of the golden calf. Even later in Israel’s history, Jeroboam made two golden calves to keep Israel from following God’s revealed means of worship. We apply this to those today who look to past apostasy for inspiration and call it the “ancient future.” True faith has God and His promises as its object. We show that we must believe what God has said through Scripture and not devise man-made means that are more suitable to the desires of religious consumers. The lust for tangibility to replace faith in God and His promises leads to apostasy. That has not changed.
