Study Notes:

1. We must be DETERMINED in the race of faith.
Vs.12-14
1) We are to STRENGTHEN that which is weak.
Vs. 12
The first thing that happens to a runner when he starts to tire is that his
arms drop. The second to go are the knees.
The only way you can hope to continue is by focusing on the goal.
Heb 12:1-2, Isa 35:3-4, Job 4:3-4
2) We are to make STRAIGHT paths for our feet
Vs. 13
Making straight paths for your feet refers to staying in your own lane in the
race. When you get out of your lane, you not only disqualify yourself but
often interfere with other runners.
Prov 4:25-27

3) We are to help to others be STRONG in the race.
Vs. 13b
The point is every consideration should be made to help everyone finish
the race. The Lame could apply to weak, limping Christians, who are easily
tripped up or misled.
Rom 14:12-13
Heb 3:13-14, Heb 4:1-2, Heb 6:1-2, Heb 10:24-25
4) We are to pursue peace and be SANCTIFIED in our daily living.
Vs. 14

John 15:18
I think that the writer is specifically speaking about those we are running
the race with. The word “make every effort” or “pursue” is an uniquely
aggressive word.
Rom 12:18-19
We are only responsible for our side of the peace process, but we cannot
use another’s unwillingness to not seek after peace.
In other words, when unbelievers see a Christian’s peacefulness and
holiness, they are attracted to the Lord.
John 13:35, Matt 5:8-9
Character and peace are woven together as a single garment of the
soul.

2. We must be certain that no one is DISQUALIFIED from the race.
Vs.15-17
1) We must see that no one COMES short of the grace of God.
The word, misses, means to come too late, to be left out.
The problem is not the amount of grace that is available.
The problem is for those that choose not to receive it.
Rom 5:20
Eph 3:17-19
Growing in the grace of God is meant to be a corporate experience.

2) We must be aware of the bitterness that CAUSES trouble.
Moses warned the Israelites in the wilderness using the same terminology.
Deut 29:18-19
“to cause trouble, and defiled many”.
Some apostates simply fall away from the church and are never heard from
again.

3) We must see that no one is CORRUPTED like Esau.
Vs. 16
The next verse indicates there are two appetites that can eliminate us from
the race—
 the sexual appetite
 and the physical appetite:
Gen 28:8-9
And notice there was no remediation for Esau.
Vs. 17
God’s message to all who are in the race is so clear:
Sexual and physical appetites, given free rein, will ruin our race.
Don’t let anyone miss out on the grace of God.

The joy of a marathon is finishing.
The joy of a Christian Marathon is finishing together!

We are a non-denominational fellowship of believers in the God of the Bible, who simply seek to know and walk with Him in Spirit and in Truth. A distinctive of Calvary Chapel is that we place an emphasis on the Word of God, simply and yet diligently studying and teaching it book-by-book, chapter-by-chapter, verse-by-verse. Please join us at Calvary Chapel Windward as we worship God and study his word.
