The Word Saves - John 12:44-50 next week The Word Resurrects
Sunday, July 17, 2022 or July 24 For this International Standard Sunday School Lesson.
It was now the final week of Jesus’ life and the Passover was approaching. He had already made His triumphant entry into Jerusalem. John also reported that even though Jesus had given many evidences of who He was, many people still did not believe in Him (see John 12:37). However, many others did believe including some of the chief rulers, but they didn’t publicly state their belief in Jesus because they were afraid of the Pharisees (see John 12:42), “for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God” (see John 12:43). Jesus’ teaching in this week’s lesson was His final words given publicly to His generally unbelieving audience. Our lesson begins with John 12:44.

I. THE OFFER TO ESCAPE FROM DARKNESS (John 12:44-46)
A. Believing in God (John 12:44-45).
It is impossible for us to have a right relationship with God the Father unless we come to Him through His Son (John 12:44-45; I Timothy 2:5).
B. Living in light (John 12:46).
It is far more dangerous to dwell in spiritual darkness than it is to be in physical darkness (John 12:46).

II. THE OFFER TO ESCAPE FROM JUDGMENT (John 12:47-50)
When men hear the message of eternal life and reject it, they are making a decision they will regret throughout eternity (John 12:47-48).
A. Hearing Jesus’ words (John 12:47). B. Rejecting Jesus’ words (John 12:48).

As Jesus Christ was backed by the Father’s authority in all things, so we should substantiate our beliefs with the authority of the Scriptures (John 12:49-50).
C. Jesus’ words are God’s words (John 12:49).
D. The authority of Jesus (John 12:50).

It is sometimes difficult for unbelievers to comprehend the reality of their lack of spiritual understanding. Many think they have insight into spirituality, but their knowledge is false. That’s why it’s important to emphasize the most important matter first; believe in the LORD Jesus Christ in order to be saved (see Acts 16:31). There is no other requirement. Once this decision has been made, the pathway to spiritual understanding and learning to live in the light has begun.
