Warning Against Disorderly Idleness!
2 Thessalonians 3:6-11

Key Verse: “For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. For we hear that there are some who walk among you in disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies.” 2 Thes 3:10-11

1) Names v6
a. We command you command – power, order instruction, authority
b. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ
c. Withdraw from withdraw – depart, abandon, leave
i. Brothers who walk disorderly disorderly – unruly, chaotic, rebellious
ii. Not walk according to traditions (patterns) traditions – beliefs, practices, habits
iii. Received from us (follow us as we follow Christ)
2) Follow v7
a. Know how you ought to follow us
b. We are not disorderly among you
3) Free service v8
a. Did not eat anyone’s bread
b. Free of charge we came free – open, available, without charge
c. Worked, labour and toil night and day labour – work, engage in
d. Not to be a burden burden – problem, liability, worry
4) Example to follow v9
a. We had authority authority – power, leadership, director
b. Want to be an example example – model, representative, type
c. How one should follow us follow – go along, understand, see, travel with
5) Work v10
a. We command this
i. If no one work work – job, effort, do, active
ii. Not to eat
6) Walk v11
a. Hear there are some
i. Walk in disorderly manner
ii. Not working at all
iii. But are busybodies busybodies – meddler, gossip, blabbermouth
Reflection:
Paul’s deep desire was that the church would understand that the journey that we are on will be one of work and service. We need to be actively daily doing all that we are able, to provide for our needs, but also walk upright and responsible when it come to the way of life that they had be taught by Paul. It is also important for the Christian not to become a busybody type of believer, for this is not the way or will that Christ Jesus desires for us to live.
