When we compare Scripture with Scripture, we can learn that Jesus Christ is our eternal sabbath rest. In Jesus Christ we have been set free from the bondage of sin and we can rest from laboring to earn righteousness through dead works. In Jesus Christ we can labor by the Spirit through faith. We must labor by the Spirit and not apart from the Spirit, striving according to His working in us (Colossians 1:29).

In order to actually enter into God's rest we must obey the gospel by faith where we repent (change our minds about serving sin unto death and choose to serve righteousness unto eternal life), turning away from our sins and turning to Jesus Christ to save us from our sins and put on Jesus Christ in baptism (Galatians 3:27-29). Once we have obeyed the gospel by faith, we can rest in Jesus Christ where we can live a life of victory above sin by God's grace through the Holy Spirit. This is the fulfillment of Isaiah 28:11-12; when we are filled with the Holy Spirit and begin speaking in other tongues. The "rest" we read about in Isaiah 28:12 is associated with repose or a resting place and is linked to an abode. The word for "weary" in that same verse is referring to "thirsty" as it's translated from the same Hebrew word in Psalm 63:1. We learn in Matthew 11:28 that Jesus will give rest to those who labour and are heavy laden. The word for "rest" here means repose just like in Isaiah 28:12. In John 4:14 we learn that the Holy Spirit is linked to the water that will forever quench someone's thirst (signifying rest)! This is the same as causing the weary (thirsty) to rest as we read about in Isaiah 28:11-12 and it is all referring to the born again experience when we receive the Holy Spirit and begin speaking in other tongues.

We abide or rest in Jesus Christ when we obey the gospel by faith. We find our abode in Him when we get baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and He finds His abode in us when we are filled with the Holy Spirit. By abiding in Jesus Christ we can then produce fruit of righteousness which comes by Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:11), not by doing righteous deeds outside of Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul desired to be found in Christ not having his own righteousness which is of the law, but righteousness of God by faith. Legal righteousness was abandoned by Paul because he recognized his need to be found in Jesus Christ not having his own righteousness by the letter of the law, but that he needed to live by the Spirit of the law.

We are to labor by the grace of God, not apart from the grace of God. We need to be perfect which is in reference to mature/complete or being of full age (in other words of mature faith). The eyes of our understanding need to be opened to how righteousness comes by Jesus Christ through understanding His grace and His righteousness and how we can freely experience it by faith. This is how we stop sinning. Not by trying to be a good person and stop sinning on our own, but by abiding in Jesus Christ and resting in Him. His grace is sufficient! We can live a life of victory above sin by resting in Jesus Christ. We receive Jesus Christ by faith and we walk in Him by faith and faith is a free will decision to obey. We receive Jesus Christ when we obey the gospel and we walk in Jesus Christ when we obey Him by walking after the Spirit and not after the flesh. Jesus became for us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption and we can't experience these things outside of Jesus Christ. This is why we must glory in the Lord because there is nothing for us to boast in. We must be careful how we talk about how we experience these things because we can easily make someone believe that we are doing all of these things by our own striving and laboring when in truth they only happen by abiding in Jesus Christ by faith and resting in Him. We only have victory above sin through Jesus Christ and anyone who is still in bondage to sin has not yet come to rest in Jesus Christ by faith in the gospel.
