Joshua 23:1-16 Commitment Renewal
In a final message to the Israelites, Joshua gives them 4 simple commands for them to follow:

1. Fear the Lord
2. Serve Him with faithfulness
3. Throw away idol gods
4. Serve the Lord

Will you obey the gods of this world or the one true God? That is the question Joshua was putting before the Israelites, and that same question comes to us in dozens of decisions we make every day.

And, like us, the Israelites had to make the decision for themselves; Joshua couldn't do it for them. To their credit, they pledged to obey the LORD. And they did obey while Joshua was alive. Unfortunately, after Joshua's death, the people broke their promise.

Icebreaker: When was the last time, you did something for the first time?

Discuss:
1. Read Joshua 24:11-13 In the first few verses of this chapter, Joshua takes time to remind the Israelites of God’s goodness. In your own life, do you take time to reflect on God’s goodness? Share a time of victory in your life.

2. Read Joshua 24:23 Anyone or anything can be an idol in your life. Several times Joshua reminds the Israelites to throw away the foreign gods (idols). Examine your own life. Is there an idol that you need to give to God? (Ex: person, place, thing or thought)

3. Read Joshua 24:24 What were the two responses from the Israelites? Will that be your response? If so, what steps do you need to take?

4. Read Psalms 128 There are great benefits when we trust in God alone and lay down the idols in our lives. What are some of those benefits spoken of in this passage of scripture?

Key Takeaway: God is with you! He’s also gone before you and prepared the way. Take time to reflect on His goodness. Surrender and yield to Him always!

Homework: Take the challenge and ask God where you need to give up your own idols.
