Week #15 The King Israel Wants Deut. 17:14-20, 25:17-19; 1 Samuel 8:10-19, 15

I. The King’s Calling (Deut. 17:14-20)
A. Israel’s king had to meet specific requirements.
B. God established the requirements.
a. God must choose him (v.15)
b. He must be an Israelite (v.15)
c. He must not multiply horses (v.16)
d. He must not multiply wives (v.17)
e. He must not store up gold/silver (v.17)
f. He must write a copy of the law (v.18)
g. He must carry and read it daily (v.19)
h. He must live out the law (v.20)

II. The King’s Charge (Deut. 25:17-19)
A. The King was to ensure the destruction of Israel’s enemies.
B. This included the Amalekites.

III. The King’s Contempt (1 Samuel 8:10-19,15)
A. For the people (1 Sam. 8:10-19)
a. He will be oppressive
B. For God – Saul’s Contempt for God (1 Sam. 15)
1. Saul’s Duty (v.1-2)
2. Saul’s Defiance (v.7-9)
3. Saul’s Defense (v.13-21)
4. Saul’s Downfall (v.24-28)

C. Was Saul a Believer?
a. God changes Saul’s heart (1 Sam. 10: 5-11)
b. One cannot lose his or her salvation.
c. Samuel tells Saul that he and his sons would join in him in paradise (1 Sam. 28:15-19)

IV. Principles for Christians
1. Be Faithful – Live obediently for the Lord. By this, you will know Christ. (John 14:21)
2. Be Fruitful – Engage your efforts in serving others and this will keep you from selfish sin. (Eph.5:1-2)
3. Be Functional – Make more of you Bible study than cursory, devotional, reading.
