What did Jesus and what does the Bible say about self defense, guns, gun control, the 2nd amendment? Did Jesus say we have a right to defend ourselves, even with deadly force? We're going to take a look today at what the Bible says in Luke 22: 36 about self defense and what it means for us today in the United States where we have the 2nd amendment and so much debate on gun control, firearms, stand your ground laws, concealed carry and other related issues. In Luke 22: 35-38 Jesus is telling his disciples that now that His time on Earth in human form is coming to and end, they need to arm themselves as they go out into the world. So how is this relevant today when it comes to defending ourselves, and defending the right to own and use guns for self defense? Does Jesus approve of your ownership of guns? The second amendment? Stand your ground laws? The right to shoot someone who breaks into your home? Or would he prefer that we no own guns? Would Jesus be a gun control supporter if He were on Earth with us today?

Luke 22:35-38

New Living Translation (NLT)

35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you out to preach the Good News and you did not have money, a traveler’s bag, or an extra pair of sandals, did you need anything?”

“No,” they replied.

36 “But now,” he said, “take your money and a traveler’s bag. And if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one! 37 For the time has come for this prophecy about me to be fulfilled: ‘He was counted among the rebels.’[a] Yes, everything written about me by the prophets will come true.”

38 “Look, Lord,” they replied, “we have two swords among us.”

“That’s enough,” he said.
