When asked, what does repent mean, or what is repentance, most people will define repentance by saying it means, to turn from sin. While that’s an okay definition, it’s not a full biblical definition of repentance.

For example, if you had a roommate who constantly stole your stuff, but every time you confronted them about they apologized, with tears and everything. But, still just a few days later you’d catch them again taking your stuff. Would you say that their repentance was real? Probably not.

We see a scenario similar to that in, Jeremiah 34. The people gave God their word, but soon after turned right around and continue to do what they said they wouldn’t, and God judges them for it. Verses 15-16 read, “You recently repented and did what was right in my eyes… but then you turned around and profaned my name.”

Repentance is more than saying I’m sorry. It’s more that feeling bad. It’s more than just turning from sin. The biblical definition of repentance means, “to change one’s mind.” Will-Power to stop and turn from sin just isn’t enough. To truly repent, God needs to change our mind about that sin. Psalm 97:10 “O you who love the LORD, hate evil!”

True repentance happens when we see sin as God sees sin. How does he see it? As Evil. Rebellious. Prideful, Hurtful, and Hateful. Every time we choose to sin, we tell God, this sin fulfills me more than you do.

What does it mean to repent, it’s to see sin, as God sees it. To hate sin, like God hates it. When we do, the action of turning from sin, to Jesus, is easy.

If you’re struggling with sin, pray asking God to change the way you see that sin.

That’s today’s Bible Munch.
