One of the things that people have a tough time understanding is why God didn't outlaw slavery. The problem is that when we consider this topic, we're applying our supposed 21st century ethics on a culture different than our own. The fact remains though, even though we try to deny it, in western culture today we do have slavery. If you have a mortgage with the bank: you're a slave to the bank. No, this form of slavery isn't the brutal slavery that comes to mind as occurring in some parts of the world, but it is slavery. The slavery regulated by God in the Bible isn't the brutal slavery that man often practices, but the same type of slavery that many industrialized countries have today (slavery to pay off debts). We only have to look to places like Deuteronomy 15 to know this to be so, for how masters were to treat their servants is so much different than the caricature of how God views slavery is often portrayed. What was Israel to do with their Hebrew slaves after 6 years? In Lesson 49 of our study of Deuteronomy we learn the answer to this question.
