Israel was in Kadesh, which we place on the east side of the Jordan River. They are travelling towards Canaan, which from their position requires them to pass through the land of Edom, so they send messengers to the king of Edom in order to gain permission. He refuses. What did he tell Israel that he would do, if they tried to pass through anyways? In Lesson 79 of our study of Numbers we learn the answer to this question.
