Over the last few chapters, Moses has been showing Israel that it was by God's grace and his goodness that they were inheriting the land of Canaan. It was not based on their righteousness, not even a little. And if Israel would continue to follow God's will, God would continue to bless them and the land. If they would not, then he would curse them and the land. Therefore, when Israel crossed the Jordan River to take the land, they were to bless Mount Gerizim and curse Mount Ebal. Why were they told to do this? In Lesson 39 of our study of Deuteronomy we learn the answer to this question.
