"And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? "
(Matthew 21:8-10)
For this feast Jews came from all over Palestine. Some walked, some came by camels and some came by donkeys. Thousand upon thousands of people would come for the Passover feast.
This verse says there were multitudes yet it was only a fraction that waved their palms and praised Jesus as he rode in. Many of the people asked, "Who is this?" The majority of the Jews didn't know who Jesus was. The people that did know him had made up their mind that he was more than the Jesus of Nazareth, and more than a carpenter. He was their king.
By coming to that conclusion they separated themselves from everyone else who was there for just a party. They had something special in their heart that caused them to worship Jesus. They took the palms that were used to fan kings and laid them on the street. They took the clothes off their back that signified labor and provision. They did everything they could to give honor and show that he was their everything.
This week is a great week to step back and say, "Who is this Jesus to me?" At this time of year there will be movies, messages and Passion plays, but who is Jesus to YOU? It doesn't matter who He is to everyone else around you. It's you that He's looking for. What has He done for you? Who is He to you? The more special Jesus is to you, the easier it will be for you to lay down a palm branch, or the sweat of your labor which would be your revenue, your time or your energy.
Let this be a week that you rediscover, or maybe discover for the first time, who Jesus really is to you. It may require you to separate yourself from all the religious activity going on around you. Let others gather for church and for dinner, and celebrate in their own way. But in your heart let there be a different beat. You have met the man from Galilee who forgave you and put your name in the Book of Life. He has given you an eternity with Him!
