The Boundless Reach of Redemption

Chapters 8 and 9 of Matthew’s gospel present us with a record of 9 miracles of Jesus. These miracles were not merely a bit of supernatural entertainment, they served the purpose of displaying the power and authority of Jesus, they revealed the compassion of Jesus, they affirmed the identity of Jesus, and they inspired faith in, allegiance to, and worship of Jesus.

If Jesus really is who He claimed to be, the Son of God and the Savior of the world, then we should expect He would have the power to perform these kinds of miracles. Matthew, the former tax collector and accountant, gathers these remarkable events onto his spreadsheet to remind us that Jesus indeed has authority over disease, disasters, demons and even death itself.

Join Pastor Jim as he walks us through this amazing story of how Jesus rescued and restored some of the most tormented and miserable souls on the planet. And if Jesus could do that for these men, what might that mean He can do for us? (31:52)

(6:26) Call to Worship: Faithfulness of God
(Excerpts from Psalm 33, 36, 86, 100, 143 and Romans 8)

ALL: For the word of the LORD is right and true; He is faithful in all He does.

MEN: Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens; Your faithfulness to the skies.

WOMEN: But You, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.

MEN: For the LORD is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.

WOMEN: O LORD, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy; in Your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief.

MEN: The LORD is faithful to all His promises and loving toward all He has made.

ALL: For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(30:12) Creed: The Providence of God
(Source: Heidelberg Catechism, Questions 27, 28)

Leader: What do you understand by the providence of God?

People: Providence is the almighty and ever-present power of God by which God upholds, as with His hand, heaven and earth and all creatures, and so rules them that leaf and blade, rain and drought, fruitful and lean years, food and drink, health and sickness, prosperity and poverty - all things, in fact, come to us not by chance but by His fatherly hand.

Leader: How does the knowledge of God’s creation and providence help us?

People: We can be patient in adversity, thankful in prosperity, and for the future we can have good confidence in our faithful God and Father that no creature will separate us from His love. For all creatures are so completely in His hand that without His will they can neither move nor be moved.
